3rd June 2005 Erratum
Landbased aquaculture licence holders may have received a letter
from PIRSA asking them to make sure that The Minister's name is
added to their existing Public Liability insurance policies. This ONLY applies
to leaseholders (Marine licences) PIRSA will be sending out a letter
to land based licence holders to clarify this issue.
The third Deakin RAS workshop is next
month on 25th and 26th June. Professor
Tom Losordo will be the main presenter and I understand that
there will be a lot of new material on systems management and
modeling as well as a review of the mass balance
criteria.
A group deal for IAASA members has been arranged
for a special price for the workshop registration fee.
I also understand that SA FarmBis will consider subsidising
the workshop fee by 65% and is also considering possible
contribution towards travel and accommodation expenses for SA
farmers to attend this workshop.
Those of you who have been to previous workshops run by Tom
Losordo will know firsthand the sort of knowledge and skill
that can be gained by attending this type of workshop. To those
of you who have not been to this type of RAS workshop - if
you want to learn about fish culture in Recirculating Aquaculture
Systems from one of the world's experts on the subject then make
the effort and come.
Please let me know asap if you are planning to go so
I can organise the IAASA group rate. I have also negotiated a motel
within walking distance of Deakin for $80 for a double room per
night. Members might also consider car pooling to share travel
costs.
I have created a summary of the workshop here.
Please use the form on that page to register your interest,
or call me on 08 8362 8042.
Cheers, Robin

at the outside broodstock tanks at Pt Augusta. Note the backup
oxygen bottle in background - just in case the online oxygen
supply fails. In this industry you need backup systems for
your backup systems :-)

A small group of IAASA members visited the Port Augusta Hatchery
last month. There were some very large Yellowtail Kingfish brood
stock - main broodstock kept in custom indoor breeding tanks, backup
broodstock in the shade covered area seen here and backup to backup
broodstock in cages in sea. One pair of fish can produce enough
eggs to provide all the fingerlings needed by the fish farmers
for a year. The hatchery is only fully active for a short period
of the year but because of the saline atmosphere repairs and maintenance
are an all year round activity.
THE INVENTORS - WEDNESDAY 11TH MAY 2005
The Western Australian Challenger TAFE/McRobert
Aquaculture Systems 'SIFTS' invention was on ABC TV's 'New
Inventors' on the evening of May 18, 2005 and
won the evening prize and goes on to the final.
The novel technology combines increased fish production with decreased
operating costs and improved environmental sustainability. It is
currently being tested in a TAFEWA funded project (plus NAC/FRDC
support) in the WA Wheatbelt with CY O'Connor TAFE in areas affected
by salinity. However, we believe the SIFTS will be demonstrated
to be equally applicable to freshwater bodies and sheltered marine
environments.
More information on the SIFTS technology can be found at:
http://www.challengertafe.wa.edu.au/scripts/viewarticle.asp?NID=5178
and through the link on this site to McRobert Aqaculture Systems.
Inland Saline workshop at Sardi
Sardi reported on results from Cookes Plains
research and provided some Excel analysis and projections of the
profitability for possible inland saline farms. Plans to utilise
the water used for salt interception at Waikerie and pumped to
Stockyard Plains were discussed based upon an Aquaculture Park
concept. Comments were invited from all possible stakeholders at
the workshop. IAASA will be seeking an opportunity for a formal
reply to SARDI once the views of the membership have been canvassed.
Licence Renewals
Inland Aquaculture Licences in South Australia for existing licence
holders are being renewed but the invoice for the licence will
be sent once cost recovery negotiations have been agreed - contact
PIRSA Aquaculture to get some idea of the likely fee increase for
your licence category (A , B or C)
